Defining Digital Transformation
Very often people are found to be using the words Digitization, Digitalization and Digital Transformation interchangeably.
Digitization:
This is as naive as conversion of analog data to digital form. This is essential to be able to eventually process the data on the digital channels. An example for this could be conversion of paper formats to digital format (like print houses maintaining websites to publish the newspaper online)
Digitalization:
This pertains to use of digital technologies and digitally enabled approaches to improve business processes and business models.
To apply this in New York times context, the print house is exploiting the digital channels to expand its offerings to podcasts ! Another example can be around using Smart Glasses with the line of sight digital instructions to assist mechanics in troubleshooting machines
Digital Transformation:
THIS IS A COORDINATED CHANGE EFFORT AT SCALE ,DIFFUSED THROUGH THE OPERATING MODEL AND ALL ASPECTS OF THE BUSINESS (PEOPLE, PROCESS , TECHNOLOGY AND METRICS)
The goal is to bring meaningful outcomes for the organization , integration of various DIGITALIZATION initiatives (like Augmented Reality, 3D Printing ,IOT etc) to drive fundamental transformation of the business processes
